When John Sr. retired from racing in 1991, Johnny Jr. "JB" began his racing career the next year. After racing throughout the 1980's in the Midwest, he was signed to run in the American Speed Association (ASA) series in 1990, where he finished 8th in the standings and won Rookie of the Year Honors.

In 1993, Benson won the ASA championship and began his NASCAR career. Since then, Benson has competed in all three major NASCAR series. In 2006, he finished 2nd in the Craftsman Truck Series standings, behind Todd Bodine. Although often called upon to run part-time in the Sprint Cup or Nationwide Series, Benson's primary focus is racing full-time in the #23 Toyota Tundra for Bill Davis Racing.
