John Waters, also known as "The Pope Of Trash," is a notorious film director, writer and producer. His movies, such as the infamous Pink Flamingos, are often considered outside of the mainstream. The majority of Waters' films are set in and around Baltimore, Maryland. He took care to cast locals and was especially fond of casting his childhood friend Divine in his features.
Lawsuit
Songwriter Theodore Vann filed suit against John Waters in November 2008 for allegedly using his song "Santa Claus is a Black Man" on his Christmas album titled A John Waters Christmas, released in 2006. Vann was said to have denied Waters the usage of the song because Waters "is not considered mainstream." Waters reportedly made fun of the song in interviews referring to it as being " a crackpot carol" and a "Christmas lunatic song."Daily News: Brooklyn songwriter muddies John Waters (November 24, 2008)
