Ice hockey coach and television commentator John Tortorella serves as the head coach of the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League. He previously served as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2001 to 2008 and is also the head coach of the U.S. National Men's Hockey Team.

Playing Career
Tortorella began his career playing college hockey for the University of Maine Black Bears in the NCAA in 1978. After graduation, he played in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League for six seasons, with the Hampton Roads Gulls, Erie Golden Blades, Nashville South Stars and Virginia Lancers. After the 1985-1986 season, which was his statistically best with 37 goals, 59 assists and 153 penalty minutes, Tortorella retired as a player.HockeyDB.com: John Tortorella StatsCoaching Career
After retiring as a player, Tortorella stayed on with the Virginia Lancers as the team's head coach. He moved to the American Hockey League for one season as an assistant for the New Haven Nighthawks in 1988. Tortorella was then hired as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League. After six seasons with the Sabres, Tortorella returned to the American Hockey League, serving as an assistant coach for the Rochester Americans.
