When elected to the Senate in 2003, Sununu was the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. In his 2008 re-election campaign, Sununu faces a strong challenge from Shaheen. Life and Career
Sununu grew up in Salem, New Hampshire, and first ran for public office in 1996, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire's First District. In 2002, Sununu challenged incumbent Governor Jeanne Shaheen for the U.S. Senate seat and won. During the 2008 Senate race Sununu was defeated. However, he was appointed another government position in December 2008 with the oversight committee reviewing the $700 billion government financial bailout program.
