  • British resident John Rothwell, also known as King Arthur Pendragon, was ordered to abandon his camp near Stonehenge on April 27, 2009. Rothwell set up camp on the site in June of 2008 to protest the fact that visitors to the area are restricted to specific areas of Stonehenge and not allowed to walk up and touch the ancient stones. The eviction notice ordered Rothwell to vacate the area by May 3, 2009, but Rothwell stated on that date that he had no intention of leaving. The Guardian: Stonehenge protester King Arthur Pendragon defies eviction order (May 3, 2009)

"We have opened a bottle of mead and we are drinking to Stonehenge. I have done a short ritual and spell of protection, calling on the kings of old. I am still here so I am in breach of the order as they see it but I have as much right as anyone else to be here. I am not blocking the byway; other tourists park along there. I am not going to go, I am battening down the hatches and continuing my lawful right to protest and my equal right to religious practice."BBC News: Pagan vows to stay at Stonehenge (May 3, 2009)
