John McDonald

  • John McDonald is an infielder for the Toronto Blue Jays. After being one of the last student athletes to play baseball for Providence College, McDonald was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 12th round of the 1996 amateur draft. After three years in the Indians' minor league system, McDonald made his major league debut in 1999. In 2004 the Indians traded McDonald to the Blue Jays for Tom Mastny. In 2005 the Blue Jays traded McDonald to the Detroit Tigers for future considerations. Ironically, those future considerations turned out to be McDonald, as the Blue Jays purchased his contract months later.
  • Strengths

McDonald is a stellar defensive player, and his ability to play third base, shortstop, makes him a solid utility infielder. He also displays good plate patience.[1]
  • Weaknesses

With only 8 home runs in 10 seasons, McDonald has almost no pop in his bat.[1]
