2000 Presidential Campaign
John McCain first campaigned for the presidency in 2000, when he championed himself as a reformist. McCain's main competition came from Texas Governor George W. Bush, and their ensuing political battle was recorded as one of the most brutal in recent history. Both candidates repeatedly attacked the other's integrity in attempts to dislodge their conservative base. Nine devastating primary losses on Super Tuesday crippled McCain's campaign, compelling him to drop out of the race on March 9, 2000. -
