Mayer's fourth studio-recorded album, Battle Studies was released on November 17, 2009.

Following the release of Battle Studies, Mayer was featured in a Playboy magazine interview where he made some controversial remarks that were criticized for being racist and comments about his sex life with ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson. Mayer then apologized numerous times through his Twitter account and on stage.
