John Legend performed at the 2009 Academy Awards. He participated in a medley of the three songs nominated for Best Song, Down to Earth from Wall-E and "Jai Ho" and "O Saya", both from Slumdog Millionaire. Legend sang the part from Down to Earth while AR Rahman sang the parts from Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman composed the music from the movie. Legend's part were supposed be performed by Peter Gabriel, but he canceled to protest that the songs were not given individual performance time.
