    Hiatt's approach to music is distinctive, following the singer-songwriter tradition of confessional, intimate lyrics, but strongly steeped in American roots genres, such as blues, folk, country and rockabilly. His earlier work came with a heavy dose of cynicism, much like early Elvis Costello, but by the time he released his acclaimed 1987 album Bring the Family, his tone had shifted in a more heartfelt direction.
