  • Early Years

    Frankenheimer was raised in Queens, New York, and at one point thought he wanted to be a professional tennis player. While serving in the Air Force, he was assigned to the Motion Picture Squadron where he was introduced to filmmaking.   • Career

    Frankenheimer began directing in television, making his film directorial debut in 1957, with The Young Stranger. In 1962, he directed the film Birdman of Alcatraz, which received four Oscar nominations. Frankenheimer moved to Europe in the late 1960's, focusing on film, rather than television work. His HBO Vietnam War-era drama Path to War was released in May 2002 and was nominated for two Emmy Awards.
