Early Years

Career
Frankenheimer began directing in television, making his film directorial debut in 1957, with The Young Stranger. In 1962, he directed the film Birdman of Alcatraz, which received four Oscar nominations. Frankenheimer moved to Europe in the late 1960's, focusing on film, rather than television work. His HBO Vietnam War-era drama Path to War was released in May 2002 and was nominated for two Emmy Awards. He died later that year, while working on the fifth Exorcist film.allmovie: John Frankenheimer Biography -
