In his early years of coaching, Fox spent time with various college football teams as a secondary coach such as in 1980 with the Boise State Broncos, 1982 with the Utah Utes and 1983 with the Iowa State Cyclones. Fox made his NFL coaching debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the defensive backs coach, a position he played in college.
