Background
Born into a rich, politically-connected Boston family of Irish Catholics, John F. Kennedy and his eight siblings attended elite private schools, and enjoyed sailboating, servants, and summer homes.During his youth, Kennedy suffered frequent illnesses, which ignited his competitive nature, driving him to write a best-selling book while in attendance at Harvard, and to volunteer for hazardous combat duty during World War II. Returning home as a war hero, Kennedy entered politics, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953, the U.S. Senate from 1953 to 1961, and U.S. President from 1961 until his assassination in November of 1963.
