Leadership Fight with Waxman
Dingell was the head of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce until November 2008. As a Representative from Michigan, Dingell was favored by labor groups and auto industry interests to keep the post. However, Dingell's age, and a challenge from Henry Waxman, who is generally considered more liberal and a more fervent environmentalist, caused his House colleagues to vote him out of the position by a margin of 137 to 122. Waxman was previously the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The New York Times: Longtime Head of House Energy Panel Is Ousted (November 20, 2008)
