Professional golfer John Daly currently plays on the PGA Tour. He won the PGA Rookie of the Year award and PGA Championship in 1991 as well as the British Open in 1995. Despite not having success in recent years, and being suspended from the PGA for six months between December 2008 and May 2009, Daly is still one of the more popular golfers on the tour.
As the end of his suspension neared, a newly-slimmed down Daly played golf in European venues, including finishing the Italian Open tied for second behind Daniel Vancsik, on May 10, 2009.Media Hangout: John Daly Suspension (May 10, 2009)
Economic Woes
During the 2009 Masters tournament, held between April 9 and April 12, 2009, Daly sold t-shirts and other sports memorabilia across the street from the Augusta National Golf Club, citing his impending bankruptcy due to a loss of sponsorship, plundered winnings and his current suspension from the PGA Tour.SportningNews.com: John Daly selling wares outside Augusta
Personal Life
During his career, Daly has had many incidents involving gambling, drugs, and alcohol. According to his autobiography, he has lost between $50 and $60 million through gambling.
On October 26, 2008, Daly was taken into custody by police in Winston-Salem outside of a Hooters restaurant. Daly was treated by emergency workers outside of the restaurant when he was found uncooperative. It was later determined he was intoxicated and was taken to a detention center for a 24 hour stay.Canadian Press: John Daly drunk, detained in North Carolina
In early May of 2008, Daly's ex-wife Paulette Dean Daly was rumored to be linked to accused steroid user and MLB player Roger Clemens. The former Mrs. Daly and Clemens reportedly had an affair while Clemens was married, but both deny the rumor.
Suspension
On December 31, 2008, Daly told the press that he is serving a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour after inappropriate conduct, including an October 2008 jail stay for intoxication. This is the second suspension Daly has served.ESPN.com: John Daly Says He's Serving 6-month Suspension
