John Coltrane was an influential tenor saxophonist, composer and band leader whose 20+ year career helped shape the progression of Jazz and expand the boundaries of what could be done with the Saxophone. With a number of classic recordings and groundbreaking compositions, Coltrane is considered to be one of the towering figures in the world of Jazz.
Career
Born and raised in North Carolina, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia and began playing music in various clubs. After a brief stint in the U.S. Navy, Coltrane was asked to join Miles Davis' quintet (with whom he played with for a number of years). While his Heroin addiction led to the group's disbanding, he eventually recovered and went on to produce a number of classic recordings as a band leader and soloist, including "Giant Steps", "Blue Train" and "A Love Supreme."
