Born and raised in North Carolina, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia and began playing music in various clubs. After a brief stint in the U.S. Navy, Coltrane was asked to join Miles Davis' quintet (with whom he played with for a number of years). While his Heroin addiction led to the group's disbanding, he eventually recovered and went on to produce a number of classic recordings as a band leader and soloist, including "Giant Steps", "Blue Train" and "A Love Supreme."
