As a Director
Cassavetes' directorial debut came about because of an offhand comment he made on a radio show. In 1957, he was being interviewed about a recent role he played when he commented that he felt the film was a disappointment. He went on to say that he could make a better one, if only he could find funding. Cassavetes promised listeners that if they contributed, he would make a film "about people". The listeners responded, and Cassavetes began work on Shadows with a group of his acting students. It was released internationally in 1960, and won the Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival.Fandango.com: John Cassavetes
