Football Career
Following his college football career with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Carney signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1987. He played strictly with the Bengals' practice squad, then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers later in the season, to fill in for players that were on strike. In 1990, Carney signed with the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, then the Chargers again. He continued with the Chargers until 2001, earning his first Pro Bowl selection in 1994. In 2001, Carney signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he played until 2007, when he went to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was cut by the Jaguars eight games into the season and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Carney entered free agency once again in 2008, signing with the New York Giants.NFL.com: John Carney
