  • Representative John Boehner is the Republican Minority Leader in the House of Representatives. He represents Ohio's 8th congressional district, including parts of Dayton and suburbs of Cincinnati.
  • Political Career

From 1985 to 1990, Boehner served as an Ohio state representative. In 1990, he defeated disgraced Republican Representative Donald Lukens in the primary election and went on to win his seat.

After Majority Leader Tom DeLay was indicated on corruption charges and stepped down, Boehner replaced him on February 2, 2006, besting Majority Whip Roy Blunt, who was expected to take the position. He has been a strong defender of The Bush Administration and the Republican agenda, particularly on issues of national security. He's currently heading up the Freedom Project, with the aim of regaining a Republican majority in Congress. (The 2006 elections put both houses in Democratic hands.)

  • Mark Foley Scandal

Boehner was alleged to have known about Representative Mark Foley's inappropriate contact with House interns well before the story became widespread in the fall of 2006. Boehner insists he told Speaker Dennis Hastert about the Foley situation, and had been assured it was "taken care of."
