  • John Amaechi is a retired NBA player and current United Kingdom broadcaster and political activist. Amaechi played in the NBA for five seasons and is the first NBA player in the history of the sport to admit publicly that he is gay. In February of 2007, Amaechi spoke about being gay and also released a book, Man in the Middle, which discusses his basketball career as a closeted athlete. While Amaechi received public support from other players, Tim Hardaway was most outspoken regarding the situation. Hardaway's scathing remarks regarding homosexuality made national news. Hardaway later apologized for statements he made that were deemed as insensitive.
