Joel Pineiro

Joel Pineiro Signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a free agent after the 2009 season, Joel Pineiro is a right handed starting pitcher who broke into the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners in the 2000 season.

He is a native of Puerto Rico and is 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. He was drafted by Seattle in the 12th round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft after attending Edison Community College in central Florida, where he was named Florida Junior College Pitcher of the Year for 1997. He played his high school ball at Colonial High School in Florida, where he was named the Orange County All-Star and Athlete of the Year.

Pineiro pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009 and completely rebounded from 2008. He posted a solid 15-12 record and logged 214 innings in 32 games started. He had an ERA of 3.49, striking out 105 batters while walking just a slim 27. He also had three complete games, two of those being shutouts. Pineiro also had a very low WHIP of 1.14, while opposing batters hit just .268 against him. He also allowed just 11 home runs all season.

A Cardinal in 2008, Pineiro had a tough season. He finished with a 7-7 record, but more importantly, had a very high ERA of 5.15. Pineiro started 25 games for the Cards, never going the distance, and threw 148.2 innings. He struck out 81 batters, compared to 35 walks, but gave up an astronomical number of home runs: 22. Opposing batters also hit well off him, posting a .301 batting average against Pineiro.
