Charles Keating was the former head of Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which filed for bankruptcy in 1989. Keating and the firm were targets of an investigation that found Keating guilty of conspiracy, fraud and several other charges. Keating was sentenced to prison. The failure of the Lincoln Savings and Loan cost the taxpayers over $2.6 billion. McCain, together with four other senators, was criticized for his involvement in the investigation.
