Joseph George Nelson was born in Alameda, California on October 25, 1974. He attended high school at St. Joseph's Notre Dame High School. He continued his education at the University of San Francisco. Nelson made his Major League Baseball debut with the Atlanta Braves on June 13, 2001. That season he only appeared in 2 games for the Braves. He would continue to shuffle between the minors and majors until 2006 when he appeared in 43 games for the Kansas City Royals. In 2008, he appeared in 59 games for the Florida Marlins.
