Joe Meek

  • Joe Meek was an English music producer and songwriter who is cited as being rock n' roll's first independent producer.
  • Career

    Joe Meek's recording studio was located in his cramped home at 304 Holloway Road. His pioneering use of over-dubbing, editing, and homemade electronics earned him recognition as one of rock's most imaginative producers. Between 1962 and 1967 he recorded a string of hits, the most famous was "Telstar" by The Tornados.

  • Death

    In the years leading up to his death, Meek became depressed and paranoid. On February 3, 1967 Meek killed himself and his landlord, Violet Shenton, with a single barreled shotgun.
