Joe DiMaggio's Career
Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in California in 1914, DiMaggio began his career with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1932. He made his major league debut in 1936 for the New York Yankees, and played centerfield. No baseball player has ever come close to breaking his 1941 56-game hitting streak. Through his career he had a .325 Batting Average, 361 Home Runs, and 2,214 Hits. He led the Yankees to nine World Series titles in his thirteen career seasons.
Joe DiMaggio enlisted in the US Army on February 17, 1942, during World War II. He spent most of his time in the Army playing baseball to entertain the troops. He made the rank of Sergeant in 1943. Military commanders started to take these baseball games very seriously in 1944. They transferred all their best players to Hawaii and had playoffs. Joe's Army teammates in Hawaii included Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing and Johnny Beazley. Joe DiMaggio was honorably discharged from the US Army on September 14, 1945. Joe DiMaggio's Personal Life
DiMaggio was married twice, both times to actresses. In 1938, he married actress Dorothy Arnold, and divorced her in 1943. His more famous romance was his 276-day marriage to film bombshell Marilyn Monroe in 1954. DiMaggio never remarried, and continued to keep in contact with Monroe until her mysterious death in 1962.
