Joe DiMaggio

  • Joe DiMaggio was an outfielder for the New York Yankees for thirteen seasons between 1936 and 1951. He is the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and he holds the Major League record for hitting in 56 consecutive games in 1941.

  • Career

    Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in California in 1914, DiMaggio began his career with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1932. He made his major league debut in 1936 for the New York Yankees, and played centerfield. No baseball player has ever come close to breaking his 1941 56-game hitting streak, and through his career .325 Batting Average, 361 Home Run, and 2,214 Hit, he led the Yankees to nine World Series titles in his thirteen career seasons. In 1943, DiMaggio joined the U.S. Army and did not play during the 1943, 1944, or 1945 seasons.
  • Personal Life

    DiMaggio was married twice, both times to actresses. In 1938, he married actress Dorothy Arnold, and divorced her in 1943. His more famous romance was his 276-day marriage to film bombshell Marilyn Monroe in 1954. DiMaggio never remarried, and continued to keep in contact with Monroe until her mysterious death in 1962.
