  • On November 8, 2008, Joe Calzaghe faced Roy Jones Jr. in a light heavyweight championship fight. The Light Heavyweight Ring Magazine Title was on the line at the event, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

    Calzaghe won by unanimous decision, as all three judges scored the bout 118 -109.

    The fight featured lots of showboating between the two boxers.

    In the first round, Jones Jr. knocked down Calzaghe and caused a bad cut on Calzaghe's nose.

    After the knockdown, Calzaghe seemed to catch his breath and kept the pressure on Jones throughout the fight, keeping Jones against the ropes. Calzaghe then gave Roy Jones Jr. one of the worst cuts of his career as Jones was clearly bothered for the remainder of the fight. Since the second round on, Calzaghe dominated and stalked Jones throughout the fight as Calzaghe exhibited the better stamina.

    The fight featured two fighters with celebrated careers. Jones Jr. is a champion in four different weight classes. Calzaghe is undefeated in his long career with 45 wins and 21 defenses of his super middleweight title, including a unification of the division with a win over Mikkel Kessler.

    Calzaghe was coming off a victory over Bernard Hopkins, while Jones Jr. was coming off a victory over Felix Trinidad.

    The fight aired on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. EST.
