  • Space Shuttle Discovery Launch

    On March 11, 2009, Joe Acaba and partner Richard Arnold, as well as five other astronauts, will embark on a two-week mission to the International Space Station. Acaba and Arnold will make history as the first pair of school teachers to launch into space together.Newswise: Maryland Graduate Prepares for Next Shuttle Mission (February 3, 2009) The launch aboard Space shuttle Discovery, the first of four, is a construction mission where the last set of solar array wings will be installed, along with a truss element.   • Spacewalks

    Joe Acaba performed the first of his two spacewalks on March 21, 2009, when he and veteran astronaut Steve Swanson spent seven hours working on the outside of the International Space Station. The two men performed electrical work, installed a GPS antenna near the Japanese science module and attempted to assemble two platforms, which will be used to store spare parts and conduct external science experiments. The astronauts were unable to install the first platform due to a locking pin. Mission control postponed the installation for a future spacewalk.

    Acaba will be performing his second and final spacewalk with fellow teacher-turned-astronaut Richard Arnold on March 23, 2009.     Joe Acaba and the rest of the crew on Space Shuttle Discovery returned home on March 28, 2009, after a brief delay due to weather conditions in Florida.Google News: Shuttle Discovery streaks toward Earth (March 28, 2009) The 13-day construction mission, whose main purpose was to install and unfurl the last set of solar wings, was considered a success.
