Joan Winston was, along with Betty Jo Trimble, one of 'The Committee', superfans of the Star Trek television series. She organized the first-ever Star Trek convention in January 1972, and several subsequent conventions, taking an active role in keeping the program on the air. She wrote fan fiction based on Star Trek characters, and sent several ideas to Gene Roddenberry, one of which was accepted but never shot.The New York Times: Joan Winston... dies at 77 (September 21, 2008)
Joan Winston died of Alzheimer's disease on September 11, 2008.
