Joan Baez

Joan Baez is a singer/songwriter who lent her voice and star power to the civil rights and anti-war movements in the 1960s and '70s. She continues to be an advocate for free speech and political activism.

Baez can be seen in The Garden, a 2009 Academy Award nominated documentary about a 14-acre community garden in Los Angeles, California that is threatened by development.Black Valley Films: About the Film

Baez was at the center of the new folk revival that started in the early 1960s. After making her debut at the Newport Folk Festival, Baez became romantically involved with fellow troubadour Bob Dylan, with whom she performed and recorded a number of times. Throughout the '60s and '70s, Baez was one of the premiere singer/songwriters in music and helped influence a generation of new female performers, including Emmylou Harris and Joni Mitchell.

While a successful songwriter in her own right, Baez has also covered songs by a number of other artists, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, The Beatles, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Steve Earle and Ryan Adams.
