Jin-Soo Kwon

Jin-Soo Kwon is a fictional character on ABC’s Lost. He is played by Daniel Dae Kim. Jin is the husband of fellow survivor Sun-Hwa Kwon and is one of the survivors from the middle-section of Oceanic Flight 815.

Before the Crash of Oceanic Flight 815

Jin’s mother abandoned him when he was an infant, and it is unknown if the man who raised him was his father. After Jin served in the Korean Army he worked as a waiter, and while walking home one day he ran into Sun. The two had an instant connection and in just a short time Jin asked Sun to marry him. Sun’s father, Mr. Paik, told Jin he could marry Sun only if he worked for him, Jin agreed and married Sun shortly after.

A few months later, Jin was promoted to the “enforcer”. With the new title came violent requests from Mr. Paik. This promotion put a strain on his marriage, and Sun became upset when Jin started keeping secrets. In spite of their problems they tried to have a baby, but were unable to. After learning from a doctor that Sun could not have children, Jin became angry and accused Sun of knowing all along. After Jin stormed out of the room, the doctor revealed to Sun that it was Jin who was sterile and the doctor was afraid to admit it to Jin.

After Sun's father Paik learned that Sun was having an affair with Jae Lee, he ordered Jin to kill him without telling Jin why. Jin didn’t kill Jae. He beat him and told him to leave the country. Jae jumped out of his window in a suicide attempt. Mr. Paik ordered Jin to deliver wrist watches to his associates in the US, and Jin decided to take Sun with him and have a vacation. While visiting his father, Jin told him about all the trouble he got in since working for Mr. Paik. His father advised him to stay in the US once he got there. Jin decided to act on that advice. While in the Sydney Australia airport, a man approached Jin and told him he knew of his plan to run away. He warned Jin to deliver the watches or risk losing Sun. Jin and Sun then boarded Oceanic Flight 815.

After the Crash of Oceanic Flight 815

Jin was very helpful in catching fish, and he provided food for the other survivors on the beach. But since Jin and Sun didn’t speak English, there was a frustrating language barrier between them and the rest of the survivors. In time though, Sun revealed that she could speak English.

At first, Jin felt betrayed by his wife for not telling him she could speak English. Jin decided to spend less time with Sun and more time helping Michael Dawson build a raft. Jin made up with Sun before leaving on the raft, saying he was leaving to try to get them rescued. While out on the ocean, the raft was attacked by The Others, who took Michael’s son, Walt, and destroyed the raft. Jin, Sawyer, and Michael washed up back on the island and were surprised to meet more survivors, from the tail-section of the plane.

After the tail-section survivors trusted the three men they all went back to the beach camp, and Jin reunited with Sun. Although Jin was sterile, Sun and Jin somehow were able to conceive a child on the Island. This made their marriage stronger. Jin started learning a little English, and as a result became more part of the group. He aided in setting traps for The Others.

After Jack contacted the “Kahana” for rescue, Sun was able to escape from the island on a helicopter with the rest of the Oceanic Six. Jin was aboard the freighter when a bomb exploded and destroyed it, leaving Sun to think Jin had died.

After Benjamin Linus moved the Island, making it start skipping through time, Jin was found unconscious on the island by Danielle Rousseau -- back in the year 1988. After the Island jumped and stayed in the 1970s, Jin found Sawyer and the rest of the Survivors and they all decided to join the DHARMA Initiative. After three years of working as a security officer, Jin learned to speak fluent English.
