James "Jim" Gilmore III served as Governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002, and lost his race for the U.S. Senate to Mark Warner in the 2008 elections. Gilmore briefly ran for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination, but withdrew before any state primaries or caucuses were held. The Richmond native has also served as Virginia's Attorney General, and was the Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2001 to 2002.
