After the Huskies loss to the the Michigan State Spartans Basketball team in the 2009 Final Four, Jim Calhoun expressed frustration with his treatment by the media and fans. Calhoun had been second guessed for his strategy against the Spartans and he has also been accused of NCAA recruiting violations. In the post game news conference, he expressed his intention to consider his future in college basketball. Calhoun stated, "Those kind of things, that's why Dean Smith told me at 67 he got out. It wasn't basketball. It was the other things. I love the kids, love the game. I don't plan to go anyplace. Illness
The University of Connecticut announced that Calhoun would not coach the Huskies in the first round game of the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament on March 19, 2009, citing an illness. During a post-game press conference on February 22, 2009, Calhoun was asked by Hartford Courant reporter Ken Krayeske whether he would take a paycut, because of the state's deficit problems. Calhoun has been named in the March 2009 recruiting scandal of former player Nate Miles. An investigation has been launched to see if Miles was improperly given transportation, lodging and representation, among other things, in violation of NCAA policy.
