Canadian interior designer Jillian Harris was a contestant on the 13th season of the reality series The Bachelor. Single father Jason Mesnick eliminated Harris as a prospective bride, after meeting her family and vacationing with her in New Zealand.
The Bachelor is a reality television show that houses 25 women together as they date and seek the attention of a single male. Each week one or more of the contestants are voted off the show in the part of the program called the "Rose Ceremony." In the ceremony, the Bachelor gives roses to the ladies he would like to have stay in the game and get to know better. The ladies who do not receive a flower are sent home.

Harris and then fiance Ed Swiderski joined Jake Pavelka on the premiere of The Bachelor to help him make the right choice of which ten women to send home. They also planned to make an announcement of their own, but the announcement never happened. A site was been created on the Internet for the purpose of voting for Harris to be the next Bachelorette. When Harris was asked in an interview with ET Online if she would consider the role, she answered, "...part of me says, 'Jill, just go ahead and do it. You are an adventure seeker. Ultimately, Harris was choosen as the next Bachelorette on March 4, 2009 and on July 6, 2009, fans were relieved that Harris finally saw through Wes Hayden, and declined to give him a rose.
