Genre-defying author J.G Ballard died on April 19, 2009, after a years-long battle with prostate cancer. Ballard was diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer in 2006.
Ballard's bleak, semi-autobiographical meditations on the 20th century were often categorized as science fiction.
