  • The John F. Kennedy International Airport is newest of the airports in the New York area. In 2007, they served almost 48,000,000 passengers. It is the second largest gateway for international freight in the United States. It is owned by New York City and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

    Construction for JFK Airport started in 1942 with major expansions in 1957, 1962 and 1998. The first flight was July 1, 1948. The airport was originally named the New York International Airport. One month after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the name was changed to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
