Jet Magazine is a weekly periodical that features African-American celebrities and icons. The magazine regularly features a famous cover person with a printed interview, articles about the most recent news that impacts the Black community, a Jet "Beauty of the Week", and upcoming music and movie releases that feature African-American performers. Jet is currently read by more than 7 million people.http://www.myjet247.com/AboutUs.aspx
The Jet issue for the second week of July 2010 contains a story about basketball star LeBron James' decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and play for the Miami Heat. After the announcement was made, Dan Gilbert, the majority owner of the Cavaliers, released a tersely-worded statement that called James' action a "betrayal" and went on to add that "the self-declared former 'King' will be taking the 'curse' with him down south".http://www.myjet247.com/JETInsider/Buzz/Content.aspx?topic=The_King_is_dead_to_Cavs_majority_owner
Also included in the same issue of Jet is an article about the recent conviction of a White police officer for the shooting of an unarmed Black man on the Oakland, California transit system. The officer was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but this verdict enraged some in the Black community who felt that the shooting was intentional. Riots broke out in parts of the city and have led to 83 arrests as of July 9, 2010. The Department of Justice is now investigating the case and could add civil rights charges against the officer.http://www.myjet247.com/News/Content.aspx?topic=After_verdict_Feds_opening_investigation_into_Oakland_transit_killing_
