Hard-hitting Jesse Boulerice was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers during the fifth round of the 1996 National Hockey League entry draft. Boulerice played part of the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons with the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms before joining them for the full 2000-01 season.

The next season Boulerice was called up to the NHL to play in a handful of Flyers games before he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes mid-season. He finished the season with the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate, then joined Carolina for the 2002-03 season, where he remained a mainstay of the team until he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in 2006.

Boulerice played 12 games for the Blues, became a free agent at the end of the season, and then resigned for another year with the Carolina Hurricanes. In 2007, the Philadelphia Flyers reacquired Boulerice, again a free agent, but less than a month later, he was suspended 25 games for high stick to the face of Vancouver's Ryan Kesler.
