Jeru the Damaja began rhyming as a teenager and while in High School he met DJ Premier, one half of hip hop duo Gang Starr, who was also a prominent producer. DJ Premier produced Jeru's first two albums, The Sun Rises in the East (1994) and Wrath of the Math (1996). Due to a disagreement between Jeru and DJ Premier, Jeru disappeared from the rap scene until 1999 when he released his third album Heroz4hire on his own label, KnowSavage Records.
