Jerry Garcia was a singer, songwriter and guitarist known primarily as the lead-guitar player for the psychedelic Rock band The Grateful Dead. As well as his work with the Dead, Garcia was involved with a number of other groups, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, and the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo.
Grateful Dead
As one of the founding members of the legendary Rock group The Grateful Dead, Garcia helped incorporate elements of Folk, Country, Jazz and Bluegrass into the band's already eclectic sound. With its extended improvisations and extensive touring schedule, Garcia helped turn The Grateful Dead into on the premiere touring bands in the world. Over their 25+ year career, the Dead amassed a large and devoted following - many of whom saw Garcia as the embodiment of the band's ideals.
Jerry Garcia Band
While still playing with The Grateful Dead, Garcia also recorded and performed with his side project The Jerry Garcia Band. Featuring a rotating list of players, the band allowed Garcia to indulge in some of his more diverse musical tastes and ideas. The band recorded 5 studio albums.
Old and in the Way
As a lifelong Bluegrass music fan, Garcia also spent time playing in the all-star Bluegrass band Old and in the Way. Along with friends David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements and John Kahn, Old and in the Way's debut album went on to be one of the biggest selling Bluegrass releases of all time.
