Pharmacist Jerome Ersland was arrested in Oklahoma City on May 28, 2009, for the murder of 16-year-old Antwun Parker. Investigators state that Ersland shot Parker when Parker and another man attempted to rob the drug store in which Ersland works.FOX News: Pharmacist Who Shot Man Robbing Store Charged With Murder
Ersland claims the shooting was in self-defense, which is permitted under Oklahoma law. The District Attorney however says that Ersland shot Parker once in the head, then returned with another weapon, shooting him five times in the abdomen, which caused Parker's death.FOX News: Pharmacist Who Shot Man Robbing Store Charged With Murder
Robbery and Shooting
Ersland claims that on May 19, 2009, Parker and another male entered the Reliable Discount Pharmacy wearing ski masks, demanded cash and drugs and threatened the staff. Retrieving a pistol from under the counter, Ersland shot 16-year-old Parker in the head, knocking him unconscious on the floor of the drug store. Ersland then chased after the second robber, who was fleeing the scene.KTUL (Tulsa): Pharmacy Surveillance Video ReleasedAfter walking past Parker twice, Ersland retrieved a second pistol and shot Parker five times in the abdomen. The medical examiner concluded that Parker was alive after the head wound and died from the five shots to the abdomen.KTUL (Tulsa): Pharmacy Surveillance Video Released
Murder Charge
After surveillance video of the incident was released, prosecutors filed first-degree murder charges against Ersland as they felt he was not justified in killing Parker. Oklahoma law allows the use of force in self defense, however prosecutors argue that as Parker was already incapacitated, the act of Ersland shooting him five additional times was out of the scope of self defense.KFOR (Oklahoma City): DA Says Pharmacist Exceeded His Right
