Jenny Sanford is the wife of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. The governor disappeared in Argentina for five days in June 2009, not showing up for work or family responsibilities -- his office had released a statement claiming he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. On his arrival back home, he held a press conference, publicly admitting to having an affair with an Argentinian woman.
She released a statement concerning the affair soon after her husband's press conference on June 24, 2009. The statement said that the couple had agreed on a trial separation only two weeks before the affair was revealed. Jenny Sanford had learned of the affair after discovering a letter written to her husband by his Argentinian mistress, Maria Belen Shapur.
Jenny Sanford filed for divorce from the former governor in mid-December 2009. Sanford was photographed moving her belongings out of the governer's home.
