  • 10-year-old Jemma Leech suffers from cerebral palsy, an incurable brain disorder that limits her ability to perform some basic tasks and move her body. However, she has proven herself to be an accomplished author, beating out 1,600 other entrants to win the "Write Up Your Street" essay competition.

    Leech's page-long autobiographical essay, "I am Jemma and I am immortal," discusses her ambitions in life, which include winning a Grammy, an Oscar and a Nobel Prize in Literature, all in one year. Her prize for the competition totals $8,000.

    Leech, who grew up in London and now lives in Houston, also writes poetry, and hopes to write music one day as well. She can communicate only by typing into a computer.
