    At nine years old, Jelena Jankovic started playing tennis. A year later she entered local tournaments, playing the National Yugoslavian Championship and reaching the semi-finals. By eleven, she won the Limon Bowl Tournament in Italy. Soon after, Jankovic left Serbia for the U.S. and attended the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy.
