Jeffrey VanVels was found guilty of shooting and killing Grand Rapids police officer Robert Kozminski on July 8, 2007. VanVels' mother testified that since his divorce, Jeffrey had begun drinking and become despondent. In a confession taped during interrogations after the shooting, VanVels said that he had hoped to be killed by police after firing a warning shot.
