Professional football quarterback Jeff Smoker played college football with the Michigan State Spartans. He was drafted in 2004 by the St. Louis Rams, but spent the majority of his time in the National Football League on practice squads.
More recently, Smoker has played in the Arena Football League, including with the Arizona Rattlers since 2008. Smoker also attended the October 3, 2009, game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines.
"Clockgate"
During the November 3, 2001, game between the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines, Smoker threw a touchdown pass as the clock expired to TJ Duckett to give the Spartans the 26-24 win. Michigan coach Lloyd Carr believed the clock expired before the pass was completed, but the MSU timekeeper disagreed. Carr petitioned the Big Ten Conference to change the timekeeping policies and in 2002, the NCAA began keeping time rather than a team official.http://www.usatoday.com/sports/scores101/101307/101307384.htm
