Jeff Charleston

Jeff Charleston is a backup defensive end for the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. Charleston has been with an NFL team for four years, although he's technically only in his third year, because his first was spent on the practice squad with the Houston Texans. Charleston presently backs up starters Will Smith and Bobby McCray.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/teams/depth?team=nor&formationId=16 Because of an injury to erstwhile starter Charles Grant, Charleston should seem some action in Super Bowl XLIV, when his Saints take on the Indianapolis Colts.

Charleston is in his second year with the Saints, having opened his playing career in the NFL with the Colts in 2007. He played in all 16 games this year, always coming off the bench. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 by the Houston Texans, but he never suited up for them in a regular-season game. After being released by the Colts in 2008, Charleston was signed and then cut by the Saints. The biggest reason for Charleston's quiet campaign wasn't poor play, so much as lack of opportunity. Charleston didn't see as much time in 2009/10 as in years past because, for the most part, the starting defensive ends, Will Smith and Charles Grant, stayed healthy. Charleston was actually expecting to play a lot early in the seasons as Smith and Grant were expecting suspensions, but when they were exonerated by the league for using banned substances, Charleston's playing time plummeted.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4476485 However, with Grant sidelined by injury, Charleston should get substantial playing time against the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
