Jeff Bingaman is the Democratic junior Senator from New Mexico. He began his Senate career in 1983, and is currently serving his fifth consecutive term. Bingaman is one of the Democratic Party's superdelegates who endorsed Barack Obama's Democratic nomination in 2008.
Record Service
Having continuously held his Senate seat since 1983, Bingaman is currently the fifth longest-serving junior senator. His continued service with senior senator Pete Domenici—who has held his seat since 1973—makes them the longest-serving senate duo in the current Senate.
Pledged Superdelegate
Bingaman is one of the Democratic Party's designated superdelegates, who were hotly-contested in the 2008 Democratic Primaries. On April 28, 2008, Bingaman announced his support for Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee in the general election.
