  • Professional Profile

Raised in wealthy Darien, Connecticut, and educated at Yale University, Bewkes grew up in a life of privilege and access. However, after earning his MBA from Stanford, he took a $20,000 a year job with the fledgling pay cable network HBO in 1979. Bewkes rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming the Chief Financial Officer of the booming company in 1986, and the Chief Executive Officer in 1995. After Time Warner and AOL merged in 2000, the reorganization of the new entity resulted in Bewkes being moved into the Entertainment and Networks Division of the ill-fated combination. In 2007, Bewkes was forced to fire his good friend and HBO CEO Chris Albrecht after Albrecht was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend.
